Global Platform MeDevIS Launched for Medical Device Information
The World Health Organization (WHO) has taken a significant step forward in global healthcare by introducing MeDevIS (Medical Devices Information System), a groundbreaking online platform that serves as the first global open access clearinghouse for medical device information. This new platform is specifically designed to assist governments, regulators, and healthcare providers in making well-informed decisions when it comes to selecting, procuring, and utilizing medical devices for diagnosing, testing, and treating a wide range of health conditions.
MeDevIS features an extensive range of 2301 types of medical devices that address various health issues, including reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health; noncommunicable diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes; and infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The primary goal of this platform is to simplify the complex landscape of medical technologies, which can often prove to be challenging for both healthcare practitioners and patients to navigate.
Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director-General for Access to Medicines and Health Products, emphasized the importance of MeDevIS in a statement, saying, “The number of medical technologies used in healthcare is growing, as is their complexity, which can make it challenging for healthcare practitioners and patients to navigate. We aim to provide a one-stop shop of international information, which can be invaluable for those making decisions on life-saving medical technologies, especially in resource-limited settings, and to improve access.”
It is estimated that there are over 10,000 different medical devices utilized globally for protection, prevention, diagnostics, treatment, or rehabilitation. These devices range from simple tools like pulse oximeters and digital thermometers to more complex technologies such as hemodialysis units and defibrillators.
MeDevIS draws on the WHO Priority Medical Devices List (MDL) and the well-established WHO Essential Medicines List (EML) to create a comprehensive repository of medical devices. As the EML approaches its 50th anniversary in 2025, WHO continues to lead global health initiatives and advance access to essential healthcare resources. The organization has plans to continually improve the MeDevIS platform by engaging with stakeholders and expanding the catalog to include more technologies, especially those needed in pandemic and emergency settings.
