Gas Processing Contract Awarded by ADNOC Gas

ADNOC Gas Partners with Worley Engineering for Groundbreaking Gas Project at Bab Gas Cap

In a significant development within the United Arab Emirates’ energy sector, ADNOC Gas has officially awarded an important Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract to Worley Engineering, a move that signals the commencement of new gas processing facilities at the esteemed Bab Gas Cap (BGC). This announcement was made during a press briefing on Wednesday, underscoring its ramifications not only for ADNOC Gas but also for the broader energy landscape in the UAE.

The establishment of these new processing facilities at BGC is poised to augment ADNOC’s existing gas processing capacity by an impressive 20 percent, translating to an added capacity of more than 1.8 billion standard cubic feet per day (scfd). This ambitious expansion is part of a strategic initiative, with a Final Investment Decision (FID) anticipated to be reached by 2026. The implications of this project extend far beyond increased production figures, potentially reinforcing the UAE’s goals of energy self-sufficiency and enhanced global competitiveness in the gas sector.

At the core of the project’s design are sophisticated processing technologies aimed at maximizing the production of vital resources, including natural gas liquids (NGL), condensate, sales gas, and sulfur. The project aligns seamlessly with ADNOC’s overarching gas growth strategy, which strives to not only meet the domestic energy needs but also to position the UAE as a key player on the global gas stage.

Dr. Ahmed Alebri, CEO of ADNOC Gas, emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “Today is an important step forward for this project, which has the potential to substantially increase our gas processing capacity, unlock additional revenue, and strengthen ADNOC Gas’s position as a global gas supplier.” He further noted that the undertaking will incorporate cutting-edge gas processing technologies which will notably enhance the UAE’s journey toward gas self-sufficiency.

The engineering scope for this remarkable project is extensive. It will encompass the development of several critical units, including gas processing and conditioning units, acid gas recovery units, dehydration and sulfur recovery units, along with NGL recovery facilities and CO2 capture technology. Additionally, the endeavor includes the construction of injection facilities and auxiliary utilities, as well as the design and routing of new product pipelines. This infrastructure will ensure the efficient transfer of liquid sulfur to the Habshan Sulfur Granulation Plant, which is a crucial component of the UAE’s sulfur management strategy.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the BGC project is its integration with advanced hydrocarbon extraction methodologies from the Bab field. Following comprehensive development studies and the application of state-of-the-art technologies, ADNOC is poised to implement a simultaneous oil and gas development strategy within the field. This innovative approach could enable the extraction of up to 1.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day (BCFD) and 80 thousand barrels per day (MBD) of condensate, marking a significant leap in production capabilities.

The drive toward improved gas processing and the optimization of hydrocarbons comes in response to an ever-increasing demand for natural gas, not only within the region but globally. As the UAE seeks to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce dependence on crude oil revenues, investments in gas infrastructure become even more critical. This project at BGC, therefore, emerges as a linchpin in ADNOC’s broader initiative to bolster the nation’s standing in the global energy markets while simultaneously delivering on domestic energy requirements.

As ADNOC Gas advances through the stages of this pivotal project, the energy community keenly anticipates the outcomes of the BGC venture. With technological advancements, increased capacity, and strategic foresight, ADNOC Gas is set to enhance its contribution to the UAE’s vision for the future of energy.
