Exploring the Onboarding Journey of ACA Trainees

Simmons Gainsford Welcomes New Trainees: Insights into the Onboarding Experience

Earlier this month, Simmons Gainsford welcomed three new ICAEW trainees: Catalina Serdenciuc, Ruaidhri Morris, and Tim Henderson. As the accounting firm continues to grow, it’s always exciting to hear from fresh faces joining the team. We caught up with these new recruits to discuss why they chose Simmons Gainsford and how their onboarding journey has unfolded thus far.

A Warm Welcome & Rapid Integration

Upon joining the firm, our new trainees quickly dived into the company culture. They participated in Simmons Gainsford’s annual summer social event on August 11, which allowed them to connect with their “SG buddies” and other colleagues. Early integration is crucial in a professional environment, especially for newcomers in a bustling city like London.

In their initial days, the trainees spent time at the firm’s East Sussex office, a strategic move designed to help them familiarize themselves with various departments such as internal accounts, outsourcing, and payroll. This hands-on exposure equips them with the skills necessary to navigate client accounts effectively, providing what they describe as the best learning experience possible.

Profiles of the Trainees

Catalina Serdenciuc

Catalina, who hails from Romania, is no stranger to new experiences. With both a BSc in Statistics and Management for Business and an MSc in Management from UCL, she thrives on challenges. Her love for travel led her to join projects in Germany, Finland, Dubai, and Belgium during her academic career.

“I chose SG because of its vibrant culture and appealing benefits,” Catalina asserted. “My impression during the in-person interview was very positive.” She also highlighted the smooth onboarding process, crediting the buddy system for making the adjustment easier. Having someone to turn to for guidance has been invaluable as she acclimates to her new role.

Ruaidhri Morris

Ruaidhri comes from East Sheen and brings with him a BA (Hons) in Geography and an MSc in Management. His early years as a competitive ski-racer reflect his adventurous spirit, though he paused for academics. Ruaidhri expressed admiration for the recruitment process at Simmons Gainsford. “It has felt like a breath of fresh air compared to larger firms,” he mentioned. Both Kate Garvie, Head of HR, and Tom Jeffries, Associate Partner, left him inspired about the prospects at SG.

Despite the laundry list of training, onboarding information, and accounts preparation, Ruaidhri believes he made the right choice. “Everything is starting to make sense, and my initial impressions are only improving,” he said, underscoring the firm’s commitment to effective employee integration.

Tim Henderson

From Leicestershire, Tim comes armed with a BSc (Hons) in International Economics, which he complemented with a year studying abroad in Slovenia. His choice to join a mid-sized firm like Simmons Gainsford was strategic, aiming to engage in a broad range of projects and connect with various team members.

“The supportive work culture at SG has been instrumental in my development,” Tim shared. He appreciates the balance the firm strikes between professional responsibilities and personal growth, especially as it relates to studying for the ACA exams. Regrettably, Tim couldn’t join the group photo due to a broken wrist, but we wish him a speedy recovery.

A Commitment to Development

Simmons Gainsford’s approach to onboarding emphasizes a gentle transition into the firm. The trainees are encouraged to build relationships with their colleagues while gradually understanding their future roles as accountants. Existing ACA trainees, Alyce Perry and Will Holden, play a pivotal role in this journey by conducting in-house training sessions. Alyce noted, “This shows the career and personal development opportunities available at SG. It fosters a connection with our new staff, enriching their onboarding experience.”

Senior Training Partner Daryush Farshchi-Heidari also chimed in, sharing, “Welcoming new trainees lays the foundations for the future success of the firm. Their fresh perspectives and enthusiasm drive innovation and excellence in our profession.”

Future Opportunities for Trainees

For those considering a career in accounting, Simmons Gainsford is partnered with the HAT Group of Accountants, providing ACA and AAT training programs that commence in January and August each year. Graduates pursuing the ICAEW ACA qualification or school leavers interested in the AAT qualification are encouraged to explore these opportunities. More information can be found here.

As Simmons Gainsford continues to nurture young talent, the integration of fresh perspectives and diverse backgrounds reinforces the firm’s commitment to an engaging and successful work environment.
