Collaboration on Cherubini’s “Medea” Revealed at Abu Dhabi Festival

Abu Dhabi Festival Makes Headlines With Spectacular Production of Cherubini’s “Medea”

In a groundbreaking collaboration between Abu Dhabi Festival, Teatro Real, and the Mérida International Classical Theatre Festival, the iconic opera “Medea” by Luigi Cherubini took center stage at the historic Roman Theatre in Mérida, Spain. The grand production, which premiered on 27 and 29 June, showcased a reimagined version of the classic Greek tragedy that left audiences mesmerized.

This latest co-production of Cherubini’s “Medea” represents a significant milestone for the three institutions involved. The world premiere at the esteemed Teatro Real in Madrid during the 2023/2024 season drew high-profile guests, including Their Majesties, the King and Queen of Spain, who graced the event with their presence.

Led by the talented musical director Andrés Salado and the Orquesta de Extremadura, the production featured stunning visual and artistic direction by Paco Azorín. Set in the ancient city of Corinth, the opera delves into themes of passion, betrayal, and vengeance, ultimately culminating in the dramatic immolation of Medea—a scene that has been lauded by opera legends like Wagner and celebrated through the iconic performances of Maria Callas.

Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo, the Founder of Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and Artistic Director of Abu Dhabi Festival, expressed her excitement about the collaboration with renowned international institutions. She emphasized the importance of bringing world-class performances to diverse audiences and fostering cultural dialogue through initiatives like “Medea.”

The production also boasted a stellar creative team, including History & Mythology Consultant Pedro Sáenz Almeida, Costume Designer Ana Garay, Lighting Designer Pedro Yagüe, Audiovisual Designer Pedro Chamizo, and Movement Director Carlos Martos de la Vega. Together, they brought a visually striking and emotionally captivating rendition of the age-old tale of love, betrayal, and revenge to life on stage.

Abu Dhabi Festival’s involvement in such international partnerships highlights its commitment to promoting cultural exchange and enriching the global arts landscape. By co-producing “Medea,” the festival continues to uphold its mission of nurturing artistic excellence and fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the performing arts.

The success of this collaboration underscores Abu Dhabi Festival’s position as a key player in the international arts scene and demonstrates its dedication to presenting world-class productions that excite, inspire, and engage audiences across the globe. With its innovative programming and commitment to artistic innovation, Abu Dhabi Festival is sure to remain a significant force in the cultural realm for years to come.
