Shipping of Slug Catcher from Oman to UAE by deugro

The project, undertaken in collaboration with Deugro’s sister company dteq Transport Engineering Solutions (dteq), involved the delivery of a 28-meter-long, 7-meter-high component from Nizwa in northern Oman to the Port of Duqm, and then onward shipment to Mina Zayed Port in Abu Dhabi. This slug catcher was urgently needed for an oil and gas project in Abu Dhabi, highlighting the importance of this intricate and time-sensitive operation.

Before embarking on this ambitious transport project, Deugro meticulously planned every detail, including route surveys, transport logistics, stability assessments, lashing and lifting plans, as well as frequent technical discussions with the client and dteq team. The project team strategically chose Duqm as the departure point from Oman, despite its proximity to the Port of Sohar, in order to avoid potential delays and additional costs associated with extensive route and civil work modifications.

Deepak Fernandes, a transport engineer for dteq, emphasized the significant challenges faced during the pre-carriage phase from the cargo pick-up location in the Nizwa Industrial Estate to the Port of Duqm. The dimensions and weight of the slug catcher necessitated careful route planning to navigate obstacles such as low bridges, narrow roads, road crossings, and overhead signboards to ensure a safe and timely delivery. The journey from Nizwa to Duqm spanned over 700 kilometers and took five days to complete, with the project team encountering high winds, sandstorms, and encounters with wildlife along the way, requiring meticulous precautionary measures to safeguard both the workers and the cargo.

Upon arrival at Duqm, the slug catcher was expertly loaded onto a heavy-lift vessel with precision using onboard cranes, and securely lashed as per the method statements prepared by dteq for its voyage through the Gulf of Oman to Abu Dhabi. This seamless transition from land to sea transport reflects the extensive planning and coordination involved in executing such a complex logistics operation.
